Movie Research - The Exorcist
After viewing the movie The Exorcist (1973) which falls into the genre choice of horror or more specifically supernatural horror. A consistent set of conventions were present. The Exorcist uses conventions like effective use of sound effects both diegetic and non-diegetic and atmospheric tension through the use of dark lighting to set the mood of a movie intended to scare you. Along with these is the use of visual effects and editing to achieve the effect of a supernatural killer, a common troupe in the supernatural horror genre. There is also usage of gore and jump scares also used consistently throughout the movie. There were a few elements which stuck out to us as conventions that Sophie and I are excited to implement ourselves in our Final Task. These conventions included things like the usage of a unsettling music score and suspenseful ambience which help put the audience on edge. These two help build up the anticipation of a scare and keep them uncomfortable but yet unable to stop watching. Also liked is dim lighting and gloomy cinematography which helps to establish the tone of dread that is being sought after. However there were also a few conventions which stuck out in a negative light which me and Sophie will not be using. These include the excessive use of gore and blood which seems unnecessary and gross and the usage of jump scares rather than good storytelling to frighten the audience.
