Movie Research - Halloween (1978)

After viewing the movie Halloween (1978) which falls into the genre choice of horror a clear and consistent set of conventions used were present. Halloween uses conventions like suspenseful music, isolated settings, and dark and gloomy lighting to set the mood of a movie intended to scare you. Along with these is the use of a masked killer which is a common troupe in horror films as well as the final girl troupe where the last female protagonist faces the killer in the end. There is also usage of gore and jump scares which is used consistently throughout the movie. There were a few elements which stuck out to us as conventions that Sophie and I are excited to implement ourselves in the Final Task. These conventions included things like the usage of suspenseful and suiting music along with a suspenseful storyline. These two help build up the anticipation of a scare and keep the audience on the edge of their seat which is exactly where I want them. Also liked is dark lighting and the final girl troupe which in our case will me more similar to a final character troupe as the main protagonist has not been picked yet. However there were also a few conventions which stuck out in a negative light which me and Sophie will not be using. These include the excessive use of gore for shock value and the reliance on cheap jump scares in order to get the audience engaged, even though it only does half the job that good storytelling can do.
